Congestion

Children less than 1 year:

  • Elevate head while sleeping (Car seat, swing, etc.)
  • During winter run humidifier (Cool mist recommended).
  • Give child warm bath.
  • Give Nasal Saline Drops. (Sold over the counter)
  • Congestion persists for more then 3 days without a fever, schedule appointment.

Children 2 years old and older:

  • During winter months run humidifier (cool mist recommended)
  • Take warm shower
  • Put Vics Vapor Rub on chest (sold over the counter)
  • If Congestion persists for more then 5 days without a fever, schedule appointment.

Cough

For ages 0-24 months, make appointment.

For children 2 years and older:

  • give over the counter Delsym as directed.
  • At night, put Vic's Vapor Rub on feet with socks.
  • If cough persist, schedule an appointment.

Cradle Cap

Appears as scaly patches on the scalp for infants. Usually controlled by washing hair and combing out scales.

Under 6 months:

  • Use baby oil, massage into affected area (leave for 20 min), shampoo thoroughly. Repeat as necessary.

Diaper Rash

Use Triple Paste AF or Desitin on the affected area.

If the rash does not clear up in 4 to 5 days, please schedule an appointment.


Diarrhea

Children less than 1 year:

  • Stop formula for 24 hours and replace with Pedialyte.
  • Restate formula after 24 hours. 
  • If diarrhea persist, call and schedule an appointment.

1 year and older:

  • Give Pedialyte /Gatorade 8 oz for each loose stool.
  • No dairy for 24 hours, start brat diet, (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) for 24 hours.
  • Resume normal diet after 24 hours.
  • If symptoms persist more then 3 days, schedule an appointment.

Ear Pain

Any symptoms of ear pain, schedule an appointment, immediately.

Children that are older than 6 months should be given Ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) to relieve pain.

Ear pain may come back as soon as Motrin/Ibuprofen wears off. Continue giving pain reliever until your scheduled appointment.

Fever

We do NOT recommend ear thermometers for any age.

Infants under 2 months:

  • Take temperature under arm. If over 99.5 under arm, take temperature rectally. If fever over 100.5 rectally, call doctor. Do not give any medicine until you talk to the nurse or doctor.
  • Children aged 2 months and younger with fever over 104F - Call doctor/office immediately.

Fever that is below 104 F Please do the following:

Age 2 month to 6 month:

  • Use Acetaminophen/Tylenol.
  • Luke warm bath, wetting head with wash cloth. (DO NOT use cold water.)
  • Take temperature again 1 hour after child is given. Acetaminophen/Tylenol. If temperature goes down approx. 2 degrees. You have fever under control. If fever persist longer then 24 hours, schedule appointment.

Age 6 month and older:

  • Give child Ibuprofen/Motrin *see chart for dosage Ibuprofen. (Motrin/Advil) Luke warm bath, Wetting head. (DO NOT use cold water.)
  • Take temperature again 1 hour after child is given. acetaminophen/Tylenol. If temperature goes down approx. 2 degrees. You have fever under control. Please call and schedule appointment or call doctor if temperature stays the same or elevates after 1 hour.
  • You may alternate Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Motrin (Ibuprofen) every 4 hours. Please call and schedule appointment if you have to do this for more then 24 hours.
  • If fever persist longer then 24 hours, schedule appointment. If temperature goes down approx 2 degrees, you have fever under control.

Head Injury

Call the office or go straight to the Emergency Room.


Rash

Ages 2 years and older:

  • Give Benadryl.
  • May use Benadryl as directed for 24 hours.
  • If rash persist call for an appointment.
  • Benadryl Dosages

Sore Throat

Ages 2 years and older:

  • Give Tylenol/Motrin as directed for comfort Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil).
  • Call office and schedule an appointment.

Thrush

Appears as white patches on the baby's tongue and mouth (common yeast infection).

Please call the office and schedule an appointment to be evaluated.


Umbilical Cord Care

Falls off about 10 days to 3 weeks after birth.

Only give sponge baths until cord falls off.

It may ooze blood-tinged fluid- Keep clean and dry. It will heal by itself.

Do Not Use Antibiotic Ointment.

May clean site with alcohol daily or every other day.


Vomiting

Children less than 1 year:

  • Give Pedialyte (no juice, water, milk, sports drink) for 24 hrs.
  • Start with small amounts of Pedialyte and increase slowly. For example: Few teaspoons and wait 10 min., Give Few tablespoons, wait 10 min, 1/2 cup wait 20 min. etc. If child vomits- wait 30 min and start over.
  • Call doctor if child has not urinated for 12 hours, inside of mouth is dry, there are no tears when crying, or there is any blood in vomit.
  • If vomiting persist longer then 24 hours, schedule appointment.

Children 1 year and older:

  • Can give Pedialyte, Gatorade, Water or Popsicles.
  • Start with small amounts of Pedialyte and increase slowly. For example: Few teaspoons and wait 10 min., Give Few tablespoons, wait 10 min, 1/2 cup wait 20 min. etc. If child vomits- wait 30 min and start over.
  • Advance with fluids as tolerated.
  • Once able to tolerate fluids, start brat diet, (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) for 24 hours.
  • Call doctor if child has not urinated for 12 hours, inside of mouth is dry, there are no tears when crying, or this is any blood in vomit.
  • If vomiting persist more than 2 days, schedule an appointment.
